Response

Data for this response has been provided through to end September 2022, as the last completed quarter.

A

Several of the conditions classified within ICD Chapter IX: Diseases of the circulatory system and ICD Chapter VI: Diseases of the nervous system are deemed to be essential co-morbidities which must be coded on all admissions where they are documented in a patient’s medical history, irrespective of whether they are being actively treated. For this reason, the data provided has been limited to admissions where any of the conditions in scope were coded in primary position as the main condition treated, in accordance with National Clinical Coding Standards.

Clinical Coding of a patient’s admission is carried out after discharge from hospital and, as such, complete data is not available through to current date. Data for 2022 is subject to change as work on this continues. Attendances at hospital that do not result in admission are not subject to Clinical Coding.

Admission data is derived from reporting by discharge date. As such, patients who were admitted prior to 1st January 2018 but discharged after this date will be included. For the same reason, patients admitted prior to 30th September 2022 but discharged after this date will not be included in the numbers.

Table 1 attached gives the total number of admissions to Jersey General Hospital (JGH) per month from January 2018 to September 2022 in which any condition classified to ICD Chapter IX or ICD Chapter VI was coded as the main condition treated.

The figures are inclusive of admissions for follow-up and re-admissions following transfer from another hospital. Please note that some patients with neurological conditions require regular admission for infusion therapy to manage their conditions, which is reflected in the admission figures.
