Produced by the Freedom of Information office
Authored by States of Jersey and published on 13 April 2016.

Request

How much have the police spent on investigating child abuse in 2013, 2014 and 2015, including cases which were dropped/did not result in an arrest or charge?

How many investigations into child sex offence claims were there in 2013, 2014 and 2015

What is the average cost per investigation between 2013 and 2015?

What was the total of the highest costing investigation between 2013 and 2015? What year was this?

What was the highest number of officers working on one case at a time between 2013 and 2015? What year was this?

Response

The States of Jersey Police do not hold this information.

Individual cases, unless specifically complex are not costed.

Complex cases are given an operational name and any overtime worked is charged against that operation; however, normal salaries for officers or administrative costs are not included in this figure.

It is not possible to determine the cost of an individual case within the time limits allowed under the Freedom of Information (Jersey) Law 2011 cost regulations.

The number of child sexual assault (CSA) cases recorded by States of Jersey Police for the years 2013 to 15 are:

201320142015
465974

(This up-turn in reported sexual offending has in the main occurred post 2011 following the death of Jimmy Savile and the conclusion locally of the Operation Rectangle investigation. In addition there has been more high profile national exposure and media coverage of child sexual exploitation cases. Further local training and development of staff has also aided better identification in addition to a joint action plan with the Law Officers’ Department for rape cases.)

Information not held.

D

Information not held. However, the below operations were deemed complex and charges for overtime are shown. The multi-agency safeguarding dimension of CSA investigations make these amongst the most time consuming, complex and costly investigations.

Operation nameOvertime costs
Globe 2014£7,489
Bishop 2013£13,199
Vessel 2013£17,677

Each of the named cases had four officers attached at the height of the investigation in addition to a number of social workers.
