Health and wellbeing

The Jersey Opinion and Lifestyle Survey (JOLS) provides many of these figures. JOLS is an annual survey run by to collect data from a sample of adult Jersey residents. Statistics Jersey runs the survey each year, but we don’t always ask the same questions. For example, we only ask height and weight questions (used to calculate obesity) every other year.

Note: The 2021 data for self-health rating was taken from the 2021 Census results. This means the data was taken from the population as a whole rather than a representative sample. The JOLS survey was not conducted in 2021.

Longstanding illness and disability

JOLS asks people whether they suffer from a long-term illness or disability. Also, does that illness or disability affect their lives a little, or a lot.

Adult obesity

We calculate peoples’ body mass index (BMI) from the height and weight they report in JOLS. We categorise the BMI score as normal, overweight or obese.

Child obesity

The ‘Jersey Child Measurement Programme’ records the height and weight of all schoolchildren in Reception and Year 6 classes. We use each child’s height and weight to calculate their body mass index (BMI). Using the BMIs, we categorise each child as 'underweight', 'normal weight', 'overweight' or 'obese'.
