United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child: preliminary report to the United Kingdom

Produced by the Office of the Chief Executive
Authored by Chief Minister's and published on 18 Sep 2014
Prepared internally, no external cost

Summary

The Government of Jersey submitted this report to the United Kingdom in September 2013 seeking an extension of their ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This was subsequently approved and the extension to Jersey became effective on 29 April 2014.

The UNCRC is an international agreement which sets out a list of the civil, political, economic, social, health and cultural rights of everyone under the age of 18 years.

The UNCRC was introduced by the United Nations in 1989. Nearly all the countries in the world have signed up to the UNCRC, which means they have agreed to protect the rights of children and young people.

This report sets out how Jersey is currently compliant with the majority of UNCRC articles and the report also outlines the areas where changes are still to be made to ensure full compliance.
