iBats Jersey Review January 2016

Produced by the Environment (Infrastructure and Environment)
Authored by Dr. Charlotte Hawkins, Ms Ella Browning, Prof. Kate Jones and published on 31 Jan 2016
Cost: £5,065.00

Summary

In 2011 The Department of the Environment commenced a bat monitoring project based on the Indicator Bats Program (iBats), which is a partnership project between the Bat Conservation Trust (BCT) and The Institure of Zoology (IoZ). This monitoring forms part of Jersey's environmental monitoring programme.

It was initially assessed that ten years monitoring was a realistic timescale to establish reliable results, as annual fluctuations make it difficult to reach firm conclusions about population change.

This interim report examines five years of monitoring data (2011 to 2015). It confirms that the methodology used is robust and sufficient to deliver the quality outcome required.

Interim results identify that the two most commonly encountered species in Jersey show increased numbers over the period of the monitoring programme (2012 to 2015). These results are in line with current bat population trends in the United Kingdom.
