Employment Study

Produced by the Strategic Policy, Performance and Population (Strategic Policy, Planning and Performance)
Authored by Arup and published on
Cost: £29,887.00

Summary

A key purpose of the Island Plan is to support sustainable economic growth. This is achieved in several ways such as supporting the development of priority economic sectors and ensuring that suitable land is available for different types of businesses.

To help achieve this, we commissioned Arup to produce an Employment Study, which forms part of the evidence base for the new bridging Island Plan. It highlights trends that impact on employment land uses, including changes in the type of accommodation that visitors require, the continuing move to online shopping, a shift towards working from home and a demand for more open-plan working environments. It considers the different ways that key sectors of the Jersey economy might develop in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic and the post-Brexit period.

The Study makes several recommendations for the bridging Island Plan to support Jersey’s economic recovery and positive future sustainable growth. Many of the recommendations focus on protecting important economic assets over the short term to ensure that the post-pandemic recovery is not stifled, whilst also ensuring enough flexibility, reflective of current uncertainty and to allow new business ideas to be explored.

The development of the evidence base drew on several sources of data and statistics, and engaged with a range of stakeholders, including government officers, the Chambers of Commerce, and those working across all industries.
