The Children’s Physiotherapy Team in Jersey are all Chartered Physiotherapists. We aim to support children and young people with a range of conditions and help rehabilitate them to reach their full potential.
We provide assessment, advice and physiotherapy management of the following
conditions. We also work alongside other healthcare professionals to provide specialist help where needed. Some of the services we offer include:
- treating injuries such as broken bones, sprained muscles or ligaments
- helping children and babies / toddlers with developmental needs to progress skills such as rolling, sitting, crawling and walking
- chest problems such as cystic fibrosis
- joint problems such as arthritis
- neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
We treat children of all ages and all abilities, up to the age of 19. Sometimes young people aged 16 or above are referred to an adult service.
Referrals to our service
We only accept referrals to our service in writing from a hospital consultant. We don't currently accept referrals from GP’s, health visitors or other professionals.
Appointments
When your child or young person is coming for an assessment, consider shorts or a vest top depending on which area of the body is being assessed. They may be asked to undress to complete a thorough assessment.
Your child is assessed by a qualified children's physiotherapist and treatment is then planned around their individual needs.
We work with other professionals including the Education Department. We may share information about your child to ensure they receive the highest quality of care.
Treatment
Treatment may take place:
- in the hospital, on Robin Ward, the Special Care Baby Unit, or in the Children's Outpatients Department
- at the Child Development Centre at Overdale hospital
- in special and mainstream schools and nurseries across the Island
- at home
We agree treatment goals with you and your child. We work with and advise your child and their carers on daily management programmes. Treatment may include:
- individual sessions
- joint sessions with other professionals, for example, paediatricians, occupational therapists
- home therapy programmes
We conduct regular re-assessments to check progress. The timescale of follow up varies depending on their needs. The length of treatment varies for every child and condition.
Your child will have activities and advice to follow at home. They may need your encouragement and support to complete them. It's important that you follow the programme and contact your physiotherapist if you're unable to.
