Hearing tests

Hearing screening tests

The Audiology Department no longer runs a drop in hearing screening service.

You can be referred into our service for a formal assessment by your GP or you can contact the Audiology Department for a shorter hearing screening test, call +44 (0) 1534 442551.

If you have a large drop in your hearing

If you have a large, sudden drop in your level of hearing, which is not due to wax, contact us immediately on +44 (0) 1534 442551.

Hearing aids

We are seeing cases by appointment only at the Audiology Department, General Hospital and at Audiology, Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre (the previous Les Quennevais school).

New cases are put on a waiting list and are picked up and organised by Audiologists based upon priority and waiting time.

Hospital hearing aid repairs

There are several ways that you can get your hearing aids repaired. We advise that behind the ear hearing aids are retubed every 6 months.

After careful review of our services and in order to run our department more efficiently, our drop in hearing aid repair clinic will now run every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning only, 9am to 12pm, at Audiology, Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre. Outside of these hours, hearing aids can be left in a box at reception and they will be repaired and posted back in due course. There is a pen and envelope for your convenience.

The Audiology Department at the General Hospital operates as booked appointment only. If you would like to book an appointment at either location you can:

You can also post a hearing aid to us and we will repair it and post it back. You should include your details and any information you think will be useful to us.

Lost hearing aids

Your hearing aids are expensive medical devices, on loan from the Government of Jersey, it is important that you look after them. Should your hearing aids become lost or damaged due to negligence, a charge of £90 per hearing aid is applicable.

If you have 2 hearing aids, to replace a lost one we will need to have both hearing aids to ensure they are connected properly.

Private hearing aids

The Audiologists offer a private hearing aid service in the Audiology Department at the General Hospital. This gives you more options in terms of cosmetics and technology. There is a wide range of models to suit your needs, preferences and lifestyle. These include completely in the canal (CIC), in the ear (ITE), receiver in the canal (RIC) and traditional behind the ear models.

In the past private hearing aids were a fixed price to incorporate a long term care plan.  Now, as a non profit making service, we simply charge you the cost of devices from the manufacturer plus appointment costs to cover time, equipment and room use.

You only pay for the hearing aids if you decide to keep them. This is how we keep the hearing aid prices very low for everyone whilst not placing a burden on the taxpayer. The warranty period depends upon the manufacturer. Widex devices have a 5 year warranty. Appointment costs are non returnable. An information appointment is free.

Private hearing aid repairs

These repairs are by appointment at the General Hospital where we have the full range of connection leads and software. If you have a faulty device, which we can't repair, we can post it to the manufacturer on your behalf. Manufacturer's repair costs (if out of guarantee) are typically £75 to £100.

Batteries

Batteries can be collected from Audiology, Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre, payment is via honesty box or from the General Hospital. We can also post batteries to you and take card payment over the phone on +44 (0) 1534 442551.

Specialist tests and hearing tests requested by Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Consultants

We are seeing cases requested by ENT by appointment only at the General Hospital.

Paediatric tests (ages 8 months to 18 years)

Paediatric tests are by appointment at the General Hospital.  We have a waiting list and prioritise requests based upon need.

Newborn hearing screening

These tests are normally performed in the first 4 weeks of life. Initial newborn hearing screening is usually performed on the Maternity Unit. Babies may require a follow up appointment which will take place at Audiology, Enid Quenault Health and Wellbeing Centre. For enquiries phone us on +44 (0) 1534 442551.
