Referrals

Your GP refers you to us for an appointment. When we get the referral, our consultant reviews and prioritises all referrals and we add you name to the waiting list. Appointments are then allocated in priority / date order.

Your appointment

Most outpatient clinics are run under the direction of a consultant specialist. They work with a team of doctors, nurses or other health professionals. You may not always see the consultant for your appointment, so the person you see makes them aware of your condition.

We make every effort to keep clinics on time. Sometimes, there are emergencies, which can cause delays. Also, you may need tests or investigations where we need to wait for your results. For this reason, we suggest that you don't plan other appointments for at least two hours after your appointment.

Appointment reminder

We send you a reminder text message 2 days before your appointment. We need your mobile number if you want to receive this reminder.

If your personal details have changed, contact Appointments Department so we can update your records. Changes in details can be:

  • name
  • address
  • contact details
  • change of GP

Failure to do this means we have no way of contacting you.

What you should bring

Your appointment letter has all the details for your appointment. It might ask you to:

  • bring certain items with you, including the appointment letter
  • ask you to visit another department for tests before your appointment
  • any other information we have sent you
  • bring all medications you are taking including medicines you have brought or alternative medicines such as herbal remedies
  • bring any samples requested by your doctor or nurse
  • let us know about any change in details, such as a new address or GP

When you arrive for your appointment, you need to check in at the appointment desk in Gwyneth Huelin Wing. We register your attendance, check your details and direct you to the waiting area.

If you can't attend an appointment

If you can't attend your appointment or need to change it, phone the number on your appointment letter as soon as possible. This allows us to give you a new appointment.

Cancelling your appointment

Cancelling an appointment can result in a delay to your treatment as clinic space is limited. It costs us approximately £80 for every missed appointment. Letting us know that you're unable to attend means we can offer that time to someone on the waiting list.

Waiting times when attending an appointment

We make every effort to keep to appointment times, but this isn't always possible. Sometimes we have emergencies or appointments overrun. We may be able to book another appointment if you're unable to wait.
