Appointments

We try to offer you an appointment that's convenient and aim to see you promptly. If you're  attending a clinic, you need to arrive in plenty of time. Bring any medications or inhalers that you use with you.

If you can’t attend the appointment

Let us know as soon as possible if you cannot keep an appointment. This enables us to offer it to someone else and rearrange your appointment to a date and time more convenient for you.

Your first appointment

This involves a thorough assessment, which may take up to an hour. Your respiratory nurse asks you a number of questions to find out how your condition affects you.

The appointment may also include a simple lung function test to aid diagnosis and assess the extent of your lung condition.

Following this, you and your respiratory nurse discuss treatment options and agree a management plan together. Further appointments may then be arranged as needed.

Bring with you:

  • any inhaler, spacer devices and nebulised therapy you may use
  • a list of your current medication
  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) or asthma diary / self-management plan, if you have one

You can find out more about using inhalers on the Asthma UK or RightBreathe websites.

Interpreter service

Please let us know in advance if you would like an interpreter for a specific language including sign language, to be present during your appointments. The interpreter maintains confidentiality about all information.
