Housing Adaptation Grant for people with a disability

​​​​​​About the grant

The Housing Adaptation Grant is a grant for people with disabilities, which can be: 

  • physical
  • sensory
  • intellectual 
  • mental health related

It provides funding so you can improve your quality of life by making your home more accessible.

What the grant covers

You can use this grant to:

  • add ramps or other ways to access your home
  • add accessible bathroom facilities, such as an accessible shower or a ground-floor bathroom or toilet
  • install a stair lift
  • install grab rails
  • add space for wheelchair access

How to apply

An Occupational Therapist (OT) must clinically assess all applicants. They will determine the type of adaptations required for your home.

If you haven’t been assessed, you need to arrange a referral from the Occupational Therapist Team.

Apply for the Housing Adaptation Grant

If you can’t apply online, call +44 (0) 1534 444444 and select Option 4 for Pensions and Care team to make an appointment.

At your appointment, you must bring:

  • 3 months bank statements for all accounts of those in the household
  • an up-to-date statement of any held assets such as premium bonds, investments, property, savings and so on 
  • a letter from the landlord giving you permission to get the work done if you are renting
  • the OT’s report (if you have this)
  • 2 quotes for the adaptations from 2 separate suppliers

How much the grant covers

The amount you’ll receive from the grant depends on your household income and capital totals per year. 

The maximum grant you can receive is 100% of the costs covered.

If you’re offered a partial grant, you need to contribute towards the cost of the adaptations. For example, if you have ÂŁ15,000 in capital assets, we’ll cover 70% of the cost and you need to cover 30% of the cost. 

The grant is means tested as shown in the table below (correct as of 2024).

Eligibility for the grant

To be eligible for the grant you must: 

  • be a resident in Jersey and have an entitled status
  • have adaptations made in your primary home for the purpose of making it accessible for you
  • meet the means test as shown in the table

Your home qualifies if:

  • it’s privately owned (you or your family own it)
  • it’s rented from a landlord (excluding Andium) with a current tenancy agreement
  • you have the landlord’s permission for the adaptations

Not all properties are suitable for the adaptation due to: 

  • the age of the property
  • heritage value
  • excessive costs involved

The adaptation must enable a person with a disability to remain at home to fulfil normal life roles including personal care and accessibility. 

In some instances, alternative housing may be the only viable option. The least expensive solution which also meets your needs will be sought.

You won’t be eligible

You won’t be eligible for the grant if you don’t meet the above criteria or have capital and income values higher than those in the tables. 

Assets include:  

  • bank accounts
  • property
  • premium bonds
  • savings
  • investments 

We may also look at assets you have gifted in the past. â€‹

After you’ve applied

When we receive your application, we’ll:

  • check your application and see if you qualify for the grant
  • contact you to let you know if your application has been approved and the value of the grant
  • request you contact the suppliers to arrange delivery and fitting

Getting the work done

Your application will be rejected, and the grant won’t be paid if you start work before you get grant approval. 

It’s expected that the work will start within 6 months of your grant approval. 

The grant is paid directly to the suppliers when the work is completed.

Unsuccesful applications and making an appeal

If your application is unsuccessful and you’re unhappy with the decision, you can appeal.

You must appeal in writing to the Pension and Care team by letter or email within 21 days of the decision, explaining why you’re appealing.
