Sunday trading

Sunday trading

Sunday trading in Jersey is regulated via the Shops (Regulation of Opening and Deliveries) (Jersey) Law 2010 and the Shops (Regulation of Opening) (Jersey) Regulations 2011

Retailers in Jersey are able to trade on a Sunday if they have obtained a permit from the parish in which their shop is situated.

Shops with a retail sales area of 700 square metres or less can obtain a general permit that allows them to be opened on any Sunday, Good Friday, Liberation Day and Boxing Day. A Sunday trading permit cannot authorise the shop to open on Christmas Day.

Large shops that have a retail sales area in excess of 700 square metres can obtain a restricted hours permit that allows them to be opened between 10am and 4pm on any Sunday, Good Friday and Liberation Day. A Sunday trading permit cannot authorise large shops to open on Christmas Day.

Certain businesses conducting retail activity may be exempt from the requirement for a permit. Single permits for one-off events or occasional opening may also be obtained.

How to gain a Sunday trading permit

Sunday trading permits are granted by the Constable of each parish, who will consider whether a shop opening will cause undue disruption, traffic congestion, noise etc. Deliveries to shops on Sunday may also be limited at the Constable’s discretion.

Visit your parish hall or parish website for more information or to apply for a permit.
