Christmas Card Recycling

08 August 2006

Islanders are being encouraged to do their bit for the environment again this year by recycling their Christmas cards after the festive season.

The Transport and Technical Services Department, supported by HSBC Bank plc will be providing a Christmas card recycling service, as they have in previous years, but to make it as convenient as possible for keen recyclers, cards can go into the same banks as newspapers.

Deputy Guy de Faye, the new Minister for Transport and Technical Services who is now responsible for waste management, commented that; "Great strides have been made in developing recycling in 2005. More schemes and new facilities are on the way as part of the implementation of our Solid Waste Strategy and I hope that Islanders will keep up the excellent efforts and make use of the collection points for Christmas cards."

HSBC Bank is pleased to support the scheme for a third year, HSBC Area Director Dave Hellen said, "People’s awareness of the importance of recycling has increased over recent years, and we are keen to support this initiative, which will benefit the local environment. I am confident that this project will gain tremendous support from residents who are keen not to throw their cards away when they take them down."

There are now seven newspaper collection points around the Island including Les Quennevais shopping precinct, Rue des Pres Trading Estate, Esplanade Car Park, The Zoo, St Ouen’s Parish Depot and at the Department’s waste reception sites at Bellozanne and La Collette. Christmas cards can be deposited at all of these sites this year or pop into your local HSBC branch and hand them to a member of staff.

All cards collected will be pressed into large bales and sent to the UK for recycling.
