Funding boost for Jersey Battle of Flowers

14 June 2006

The Jersey Battle of Flowers is to receive a near 100% increase to its funding from Economic Development in a move which will enhance its status as the premier attraction in the Jersey tourism summer calendar.

An increase of £50,000 has been offered to the Council of the Jersey Battle of Flowers Association to encourage a number of initiatives to boost the carnival atmosphere and raise the enjoyment levels for the many thousands of visitors who attend the two main parades and who wish to be entertained as well be enthralled by the spectacle of the outstanding floats on display.

The additional funding will be increased to £90,000 on a pound for pound basis if the Association are successful in bringing in commercial sponsors.

Commenting on the decision to increase the funding for the Jersey Battle of Flowers, the Economic Development Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, said that he was determined to see the battle re-elevated to its natural status as the key event of the Jersey Summer season when the island is at best and should be showing itself to maximum effect.

“The Battle is our main high season showcase, therefore it needs to meet, and if possible exceed, the expectation of visitors and provide a must go every year experience for local residents.”

The Council of the Association has responded to the offer of additional funding by agreeing to target the additional revenue in a number of key areas which are likely to have the maximum impact and have set up a Council task force specifically charged with responsibility of enhancing the presentation and atmosphere of the Parades. In addition a local marketing agency will be appointed to increase the promotional programme with the objective of increasing visitor numbers, particularly among local residents who have been reducing in recent years.

The additional funding will increase the total grant for Economic Development (Tourism) to a minimum of £145,000, with this figure being increased to a total of £190,000 if the Association is successful in bringing in the additional commercial sponsorship.
