Jersey Airport has introduced additional security measures in response to increased requirements introduced for all UK airports at around 2:30 this morning.
Jersey Airport immediately implemented the Department for Transport’s requirements, since 89 percent of its flights originate or are destined for the UK. The new measures include significant restrictions on passenger cabin baggage. The Airport has also implemented heightened security arrangements in and around the Airport. There is a visible armed police presence in support of the Airport Security staff at the Airport, but Chief of Police, Graham Power has confirmed that there is no specific threat to Jersey. The public should be reassured that the Airport has implemented the requirements and put into place their existing plan for this type of situation.
So far today no flights to or from Jersey have been significantly delayed.
The public are advised to consult the Airport website (www.jerseyairport.com) for up-to-date information. The main message is that hand baggage is not permitted for any flights. A restriction is also in place on what can be taken onboard. Only items such as travel documents, pocket size wallets/purses and medication will be permitted on board. Where relevant these items should have their packaging removed and all items should be placed in a see-through bag.
The public should check in on time but expect delays both when checking in and for departure. The public are advised to contact their airlines for specific information about flights.
Provision has been made for Jersey Airport to remain open until midnight tonight should a backlog of flights, due to security related delays, become an issue. Assistant Minister for Economic Development with responsibility for the Airport, Deputy Alan McLean commented: “We have made arrangements for the Airport to stay open until midnight tonight should the need arise and I will keep a close eye on how this develops throughout the day. I sympathise with the public hoping to travel today. I am sure that they are aware the security measures that have been put in place are for the safety of the public.”
The Airport's appointed security manager is Steve Read; he is coordinating the operation and will be holding a Multi Agency Threat Risk Assessment Group meeting later today. This meeting will bring together the Airport staff, Special Branch and the Airport Security Contractor G4S. Mr Read commented: “We are reviewing the situation regularly and will update our website should the restrictions currently imposed change.”
