Planning Minister rejects application for new shellfish processing plant

The Minister for Planning and Environment, Senator Freddie Cohen, has decided not to grant planning permission for the proposed shellfish processing plant on Field 571, La Rue du Puits Mahaut, Grouville. The decision comes after the Planning Applications Panel signalled its concern about the project in February, prior to the matter being referred to the Minister.

The application was refused because of the impact of such a large structure on the countryside, which would have spoilt the open views and character of this part of Grouville. However, the Minister has indicated that he had found the decision to be a difficult balance between the needs of the Island’s economy and those of the residents of Grouville. Senator Cohen said, “Whilst it was clear to me that this is not the right site for this type of enterprise, I have a great deal of sympathy for the Jersey Oyster Company and have pledged to continue to do whatever I can to help when they find a more suitable site.”
