Washable Nappy Grants To Continue

04 August 2006

After a successful trial scheme in 2005, the Minister for Transport and Technical Services has agreed to continue the voucher scheme which encourages parents to choose washable nappies by offering a £30 grant for purchases of washable nappy products.

Disposable nappies make an alarming contribution to household waste arriving at Bellozanne with an estimated 13,000 nappies ending up in the bin each day.

“Modern washable nappies are far easier to use than the old toweling nappies most people remember” explained John Rive , Recycling Officer. “Gone are the days of awkward pins and soaking, the new cotton nappies are easy to fit, reliable and can be washed at 60o C.”

As well as cutting down on waste, families choosing the washable system can avoid the weekly costs of buying disposables saving an estimated £600 while their child is in nappies. Further saving can be made by re-using nappies for a second child.

There is a good range of real nappy products available in the Island and most brands offer a trial pack for a little over £30. It is hoped that the incentive scheme will lead to more parents switching to washables.

Vouchers for the scheme are available from the following retail outlets: A. De Gruchy & Co. Ltd (baby shop), Boots the Chemist Ltd., Lloyds Pharmacies, Checkers Superstores and Mothercare UK Ltd. Also from local Real Nappy Agents: Mark Jackson (789576) and Sarah Newall-Lecrivain (617839). Parents will also be able to use the vouchers online at www.babykind.co.uk and www.boocoo.co.uk Vouchers will also be printed in the JEP on Wednesday 19th and Friday 21st July 2006 .

Vouchers are available on a strictly one per child basis.
