Bouley Bay Road Closure

20 December 2006

The access road to the Pier at Bouley Bay is to be closed to the public with immediate effect.

Following the large fire to the headland overlooking the pier back in August, the condition of the cliff above the road to the pier has been closely monitored. The original slope was damaged by the fire and the stability of the cliff has since been deteriorating. The wet weather over the last few weeks has caused further erosion. It is therefore regretted that the road will now be closed with a security gate to prevent people from accessing the pier.

Transport and Technical Services Minister, Deputy Guy de Faye cautioned the public to take note of the potential danger. "I realise that this will inconvenience a number of people such as fishermen and boat owners, but the Department doesn’t impose these types of restriction lightly. There are large rocks on the cliff that become more precarious each time there is heavy rain. Standing or walking below this cliff is a serious risk".

It is understood that the private landowners are in negotiations with the insurers of the fireworks company to remediate the cliff face, but this work is not expected to start until early in the New Year.

Any person who has a genuine need to access the pier should contact Transport and Technical Services Department on Tel 445509.
