Archaeological Investigation: King Street

As part of a Planning agreement an archaeological investigation has been taking place at a development site at 15, King Street. Planning & Environment were notified earlier this week by the developer that their archaeologists had discovered remains of a medieval wall and scattered evidence of human occupation (in the form of animal bones and teeth and granite shards suggesting stone-masonry activity). This is clearly a significant find and consequently the Minister for Planning authorised the service of a notice offering the site immediate and full protection under the Planning & Building Jersey Law (2002) as a Site of Special Interest. The archaeological field work is proceeding and on completion a report is to be prepared giving full details of the find in terms of its extent, content and date range. This will inform a full assessment of its significance and a decision on the management of the work in progress.
