Employment Forum consults on family friendly rights in the workplace

15 June 2007

The Employment Forum is progressing with Phase two of the employment legislation programme by issuing a consultation on maternity, paternity and family friendly work policies.

The consultation seeks views on;

  • The right to maternity, paternity and adoption leave and pay
  • the right to additional unpaid parental leave during the early years of child development
  • the right to request flexibility in hours, location or times of work
  • the right to unpaid time off to look after dependents where there has been an emergency or an unexpected incident and assistance is needed.
    • Sally Johnson, Deputy Chair of the Forum, said “It is important to remember that rights relating to children and family responsibilities relate to both men and women in the workplace, and also that any new rights would be relevant to employers and employees in all industries. I would encourage anyone who could be affected by new rights relating to these subjects to put forward their views during the consultation.“

      The consultation will be distributed today to all of those who are on the Forum’s consultation database. Responses are requested by Friday 10 August.

      The Forum is an independent consultative body which must make recommendations to the Social Security Minister based on the views received during consultation with the public. The Forum’s recommendation on these rights will be presented to the Minister later this year, with a view to any new legislation being drafted during 2008.

      The Forum is holding a public workshop on Friday 22 June to give people the opportunity to discuss the issues that are included in the consultation paper. Key issues from the workshop will be fed into the recommendation.

      To receive a copy of this consultation, to be included on the Forum’s database for future consultations, or to attend the workshop on 22 June, please contact the Secretary to the Forum at K.Morel@gov.je, or telephone 447204. Copies of the consultation paper may also be obtained from the States website –
