Flamanville - one step closer

17 April 2007

The French Government has granted the ‘Décret de Création’ for the new EPR (European Pressurised Reactor) at Flamanville. The decree has been listed in the ‘Journal Officiel’; the register on which all French legislation is recorded. This is a significant step towards complete sign-off on the development of the reactor but it is understood that official signatures are still required to the document. The Island authorities expect to receive official notification once this has occurred.

Senateur Jean-François Le Grand, Président of the Conseil Général in La Manche, will be leading a team of officials from Flamanville on a visit to Jersey to discuss the development of the new reactor on 21 June 2007.

“I am grateful to Senateur Le Grand for coming to discuss the Island’s concerns with us” said Chief Minister, Senator Frank Walker. “The French authorities know we have some unanswered questions on safety issues and we have asked them to discuss these with us during their visit. The safety of Islanders is our key concern.”

A public meeting is planned on the 21 June 2007. Details will be released in early May.
