HD Ferry Service Delayed by Inspection

03 August 2007

The ramp permit issued to HD Ferries and Northern Marine, the ship managers, was suspended earlier this week. Following an inspection by Port State Control on Thursday, it has been confirmed that the permit will not be reinstated until all issues uncovered by the inspection have been addressed to the satisfaction of the MCA and Jersey Harbours.

Chief Executive and Harbourmaster, Howard Le Cornu, says “Passenger safety is paramount. As a result of the initial investigations we have no option other than to delay the boat from sailing until deficiencies have been addressed. However, taking into account the busy summer period, like HD Ferries, we wish to see these issues overcome as soon as possible and will do everything we can to facilitate this”.

The ship must remain in port until the issues identified by the MCA have been resolved. Although it appears the structural damage to the boat will be repaired by the weekend, issues regarding certification of the crew are still to be addressed.

The Minister for Economic Development, Senator Philip Ozouf, has been fully briefed and is supportive of the actions of Jersey Harbours. He continues to keep this important matter under review.

On behalf of the States of Jersey, under the Shipping (Jersey) Law 2002, Jersey Harbours is responsible for safety of life at sea in harbours and territorial waters.
