Two More Lorries Impounded In Road Check at La Collette

14 June 2007

Of the 38 vehicles stopped on Tuesday 12 June 2007 in a road check at La Collette, two lorries were impounded, thirteen drivers were issued with defect notices and 2 vehicles were operating without being registered in the Island .

Officers from Driver and Vehicle Standards, (DVS), conducted a road check near to the La Collette tip this morning. Two commercial vehicles were impounded to DVS for further inspection. One vehicle had defective brakes and the other had defective steering.

Two small commercial vehicles had not been registered in Jersey , in what may be an attempt to evade duty and 13 drivers were issued with defect rectification notices requiring them to present their vehicles at DVS with repairs completed. Several of these vehicles had numerous defects including:

Worn tyres

Worn suspension bushes

Sharp edges exposed from bodywork

Oil leaks and

Worn wind screen wiper blades

Alan Muir, Inspector of Motor Traffic, said: “Despite several reminders in press articles, it’s disappointing that some irresponsible hauliers continue to operate vehicles that are not adequately maintained and pose a danger to the driver and other road users. So far this year, DVS has taken 12 lorries off the road that were unroadworthy. "
