Jersey’s Recycling Trailer Gets Solar Powered

07 June 2007

Transport and Technical Services’ recycling awareness trailer can now generate its own electricity after having its roof fitted with a solar panel. The panel and battery system can power all the trailer’s lights, computer, DVD player and the display screen, whether indoors or outside.

The trailer, which was launched last year, is used to raise awareness about recycling, composting and other waste minimisation issues facing the island. It’s taken to community events, shows and schools to encourage people to take action.

TTS are grateful to Euronics and Sharp for donating the trailer’s electrical equipment, particularly the solar panel which costs more than £1000, and to HSBC for sponsoring the trailer.

Recycling Officer John Rive says “This is a great solution as it allows us to visit schools and remote sites to promote recycling without having to trail long power cables around. The power is free, clean and visitors to the trailer can not only learn about recycling but see how the solar panel works too."

John Dingle, Euronics Manager says “Interest in solar panels as a sustainable source of power is growing so we were very pleased to help with this project so the local community can see how they can be put to effective use."

The solar powered recycling trailer will be on display at the La Collette Green Waste Site on Friday 8th June 2007 from 9.30am until 3.45pm .
