Restrictions on UK meat imports to Jersey are lifted

24 August 2007

Fresh meat imports will be allowed back in to Jersey from Saturday 25 August providing they have a certificate showing they comply with the EU decision of 23 August, which allows susceptible live animals and their products to be exported from the UK to the rest of the European Union, subject to controls.

The States foot and mouth working group met today to review measures currently in place in the Island and felt confident that the disease control measures taken by the UK authorities and reviewed by EU veterinary experts means it is appropriate to follow the EU’s Decision and reinstate the controlled imports.

Other consequences of the EU Decision are:-

  • controls applied to personal imports have been lifted and travellers may now bring meat, meat products and dairy products for their own use, from outside the Surveillance Zone in GB.
  • horses returning from the UK to Jersey will no longer require an Export Health Certificate. Horses’ hooves should, however, still be picked out and disinfected on arrival at their yard or stable.
