Kyoto agreement extended to Jersey

16 May 2007

Following Jersey ’s application in 2006 the Kyoto Protocol has been extended to Jersey . Countries around the world have signed up to the agreement that sets limits for the amount of greenhouse emissions they can produce.

Jersey ’s emissions will form part of the UK ’s allowance so there is no specific target for the island, however, the islands greenhouse gas emissions have fallen by 36% since 1990 which is a better performance than the UK as a whole.

Chief Minister, Senator Frank Walker said “The extension of the Kyoto agreement to Jersey is welcome news. We heard from Professor Sir David King when he spoke in Jersey at the Opera House, warning how climate change is an issue of major importance for the world in this century. Jersey wants to play its part in combating climate change and we will go further than the 36% reduction on greenhouse gas emissions that we have already achieved with new measures that will shortly be announced when the Energy Policy consultation document is launched”.
