New contract signed to support recycling targets

07 August 2007

Transport & Technical Services are pleased to announce that a new contract for the handling and export of key recyclable materials has been awarded to Reclamait Limited.

The contract was awarded following a competitive tendering process and runs for a 5 year period during which time Reclamait are responsible for receiving and exporting Jersey ’s waste cardboard, paper (including newspaper and magazines) and plastic bottles to off-island recyclers.

John Richardson , Chief Officer for Transport and Technical Services, said “There are significant costs attached to recycling and we are working hard to achieve the best possible price for the island’s recyclable waste and to establish efficient and reliable systems to deal with the materials. Getting this contract in place is a major step forward. The next step is to further improve the collection system and I am looking forward to more Parishes developing their household collections to include recycling.”

Eric Fallows, General Manager, Reclamait Ltd said “We have been exporting paper and card for recycling since the early 1990’s and are thrilled to be working with the States of Jersey to increase the quantity and variety of materials that are recycled.”

Islanders can currently recycle waste paper at banks situated in eleven locations, including the Recycling Centre at Bellozanne which also provides collection facilities for domestic cardboard and plastic bottles. More collection points for these key materials are planned for the near future. Up-to-date information on recycling facilities can be found at www.gov.je/recycling or by calling the Recycling Team on 448589.
