Five more vehicles impounded in busy St Peter Road Check

24 September 2007

A further five vehicles were impounded in a St Peter road check bringing the total number of vehicles impounded, in one week, to nine.

Three commercial vehicles were impounded; Two were sent directly back to a workshop for repairs to oil leaks and to replace tyres. One large commercial vehicle was impounded with defective brakes.

Between 7.30 and 9 am on Thursday 20 September 2007 officers from Driver and Vehicle Standards, (DVS), Customs and Immigration, the States of Jersey Police and the Honorary Police of St Peter were kept extremely busy with some 2042 vehicles passing through a peak period road check on

L’ Avenue De La Reine Elizabeth II.

Seventeen drivers were issued with defect notices requiring them to present their vehicle at DVS, with defects rectified. Defects included bodywork, exhaust systems, oil leaks, mirrors and lighting. Seven drivers have to notify DVS of a change in keeper details. The States of Jersey Police reported five of those drivers for driving or insurance documentation offences, including failing to display the correct registration plates and failure to notify change of keeper details. Two others were reported for not wearing seat belts.

Two light motorcycles were impounded, one for defective brakes, exhaust and fuel leaks, and the other for a defective drive chain. Additionally the rider of the latter vehicle did not have the correct driving licence. Both riders were reported by the States of Jersey Police.

All of the 38 vehicles from which Customs and Immigration sampled fuel were running lawfully.

The drivers of four foreign registered vehicles have to register them locally and a further three drivers have to notify DVS of a change of keeper details.

Inspector of Motor Traffic, Alan Muir commented “This is the first time this site in St Peter has been used for a road check. It has turned out to be very busy and productive and all the agencies involved have been pleased with how well the check operated. St Peter’s Honorary Police did a great job making sure that traffic continued to flow on this busy section of road with the minimum amount of disruption yet still managed to pick out a considerable number of vehicles and drivers that on checking had significant defects or were breaking other laws”.
