States managers celebrate success

A group of 36 States of Jersey managers celebrated their achievements at a special awards ceremony last night (Monday 22 September).

This is the first group of public sector managers to successfully complete a recently introduced learning and development programme. The Modern Manager Programme has been tailored to help managers working for the States of Jersey bring about change, and increase efficiency.

175 managers at various levels and across most departments have now started the programme. Established in 2006, it is an 18-month intensive programme of leadership and development designed specifically to equip first line and middle managers to deliver an effective service in a modernised public sector.

Much of the content has been tailored to the needs of the public service, but the programme has also been formally accredited and gives managers the opportunity to gain a professional management qualification. Study modules include leadership, people management, finance, customer focus, communications and change.
Those taking part have had to put the theory into practice back in the workplace and demonstrate that they have used their new knowledge and skills by completing workbooks for assessment.
Chief Minister Senator Frank Walker commented: “The States has made a pledge to nurture local talent by encouraging the development of people. The Modern Manager Programme is a tangible and substantial commitment to do just that and I’m delighted to have had the chance to meet and thank the first group of people to succeed on this programme.”

Chief Executive Bill Ogley said he wanted the enthusiasm and motivation that had been generated by staff on the programme to continue and hoped he could help them find a way to continue to work together.
“We’re committed to working for Jersey and sustaining a good future for the Island. This programme has been a great success and will, I firmly believe, help create a more effective public service for everyone in Jersey.”
