Elections 2008 – are you registered to vote?

The campaign to encourage Islanders to register to vote is stepping up a pace with posters, branded busses and a marquee in St Helier all part of a drive to get more islanders out to the ballot box.

Overall responsibility for voting in the Island lies with the Policy and Procedures Committee. Its chair, Constable Derek Gray, says: “We are using a variety of means to encourage people to register to vote. We have commissioned posters, we are advertising in the local media and will be shortly be sending information directly to people at home.
There are currently around 53,000 people registered to vote in Jersey, and we estimate there are a possible 67,000 who could be registered. We want to get as close to that figure as possible.”

This year is the first year that the age to vote has been reduced to 16, and there will be an education programme to explain the importance of voting at the beginning of the next school term.

The public will be able to check if they are registered to vote by contacting their individual Parish Hall or asking at the marquee, which will be at various sites in St Helier, from 26 August to 30th August.
