Four Vehicles Impounded In St. Helier Road Check

01 April 2008

Some 427 vehicles passed through a road check in St Helier, during which four vehicles were impounded. An additional seven vehicles were found to be defective and the drivers of four foreign registered vehicles were told to register their vehicle in Jersey and obtain a local driving licence. Four other drivers were driving with out of date windscreen insurance discs.

Between 4:15pm and 5:45pm on Friday 28 March, Officers from Driver and Vehicle Standards, (DVS), and the Honorary Police of St Helier joined forces to conduct a road check on La Grande Route de St Jean.

Three vehicles were impounded at the check: a small commercial vehicle with two defective front tyres; a car with defective brakes and steering, and a moped with defective brakes. The registered keeper details of the moped were incorrect and the rider will have to present his licence and insurance at the Town Hall. A further car with defective bodywork was impounded to its owner’s home address.

The drivers of four foreign registered vehicles were required to register their car in Jersey and exchange their domestic driving licence for a Jersey driving licence. One of these drivers was warned about allowing a child under 14 years old to travel without wearing a seat belt. Two additional drivers were told to notify DVS and their parish of a change of address.

Seven further drivers were issued with defect notices requiring them to present their vehicles at DVS with defects rectified. Defects included: bodywork, oil leaks, lights, excess exhaust emissions and incorrect or damaged registration plates.

Inspector of Motor Traffic, Alan Muir commented, “This check was a fairly mixed bag. One in every twenty vehicles passing through this road check had one problem or another. Four vehicles were taken off the road until serious defects are rectified and several other drivers had problems with their vehicle, licence, registration or insurance that they will have to sort out.”
