Generous support for fire victims

25 July 2008

Donations continue to come in from generous Islanders to support the families affected by the fire at Broadlands on Monday 14 July. To date, the Parish of St Peter has collected £23,736.21 and this figure does not yet include some money that has been pledged but not yet collected.

The Parish Fund Allocation Group has agreed the distribution of the funds and arrangements are being made for the families to receive financial assistance very shortly. The Group has confirmed that all the money collected will go to those families involved.

Islanders have also been extremely generous with clothing and furniture and these appeals are now closed.

The Housing Department have been able to re-home 44 people across 17 sites and they have received great support from local hotels and guest houses. However, the department are still very keen to hear from anyone who has non-qualified accommodation available over the next few weeks. Any information, in the first instance, should go to the Customer Service Centre on Tel: 445500.

The Chief Minister, Senator Frank Walker has extended his thanks to all the agencies and the public who have worked so hard to co-ordinate the relief effort and contributed their time and money so generously. He said today, "Once again, I am truly proud to be part of a community who can respond so quickly and efficiently and with such compassion, to an emergency of this type".
