Regulations to end retail tobacco advertising and display - Extension of Consultation Period

19 December 2008

News Release 18th December 2008

The Public Health Department has decided to extend the period of consultation on tobacco advertising and promotion. Previous political endorsement of the Tobacco Strategy in 2003, which contained explicit action to introduce regulations regarding tobacco advertising, meant that a shortened period of consultation was considered appropriate.

To date there have been approximately 120 respondents to the consultation. However, feedback from some local retailers has suggested that they will have difficulty responding because of the Christmas period. It is hoped that by extending the period of consultation retailers will be more able to contribute to this important public health issue.

The revised period for consultation will now run until February 13th 2009. If you wish to take part in the consultation, visit the consultation page on the States website www.gov.je/publicconsultation and download it, or you can ask for a hard copy of the consultation paper by contacting Jane Le Gresley at the Health Promotion Department (Telephone 443901)

Notes to editors

• Recent research evidence shows that research that someone who starts smoking at the age of 15 is three times more likely to die of smoking-related cancer than someone who starts in their late 20s. In Jersey, the number of young people who describe themselves as smoking regularly doubles between year 8 and year 10.

• Previous regulatory changes proposed and implemented by the Tobacco Strategy have included increasing the minimum age of purchase and banning smoking in the workplace.

• The Restriction on Smoking [Jersey] Law 1973 allows provision for the States of Jersey to make further Regulations regarding tobacco advertising.
