Filing GST Returns

04 July 2008

GST returns for most businesses cover 3 months. Your GST Registration certificate and it's covering letter show the period end dates for your returns. Each return is due for submission no later than the last day of the following month, together with any payment of tax due.

For their first return, all taxpayers were sent a paper return form for completion.

If you sent in your return electronically (see below) you will not routinely be sent a paper form for subsequent GST periods. If you decide you need a paper form, please contact the GST Helpdesk (01534 440555, or gst@gov.je ) without delay.

Registered GST taxpayers have three options for submitting GST returns.

1. The preferred method is to submit your return via the Income Tax Business-to-Business Web site. To do so please follow the link below.

2. Alternatively you can use the free computer software developed by the Income Tax Office, to prepare and submit your GST return electronically. Many taxpayers already use this for their ITIS and/or Social Security returns, but you can if you wish just use it for GST.
For further information and to obtain the free software, please follow the link below.

3. Finally you can submit your return using the paper form sent to you by the Income Tax Office.

If you are to make your first return on paper but would like to use option 1 or 2 for subsequent returns, it would be helpful if you could advise the Income Tax Office of your intention as it will prevent a paper return being issued to you for future tax periods.

Whichever method you decide upon, you must file your GST return and pay any tax due by the due date. If you fail to file a tax return by the due date the Comptroller of Income Tax may estimate the tax due and can impose penalties prescribed by the GST legislation.
