La Moye School Benefits From Recycle Competition

16 December 2008

La Moye Primary School will receive £200 thanks to the second winner of the big plastic bottle competition, Mrs Sanchez De Vega.
Mrs Sanchez De Vega said ‘I am thrilled that my plastic bottle was picked out!  I have been entering the competition since it started and I save all my newspapers and magazines to take to the recycling bank along with my plastic bottles.  The prize is a fantastic early Christmas present and I am delighted that I can share my good fortune with La Moye Primary School.’
The big plastic bottle recycle competition was launched by Transport and Technical Services in September with the aim of encouraging islanders to find their local ‘bring bank’ and start recycling.
Two draws have taken place with each winner receiving £200 and the opportunity to nominate a local school to receive another prize of equal amount.
Cimandis, the local distributor of Coca-Cola, kindly sponsored the competition to raise awareness of plastic bottle recycling facilities on the island.
Denise Murphy, Marketing Manager, Cimandis, said ‘As a major importer of plastic bottles to the island, we have a responsibility to raise awareness of the local recycling facilities.  We hope that the competition encouraged people to start recycling and that they will continue, leading to a long-term increase in recycling levels.’
The competition received thousands of entries and since the start of the competition in September approximately 14 tonnes of plastic bottles have been collected from the island wide bring banks – that’s approximately 280,000 plastic bottles!
Emma Richardson, Assistant Recycling Officer said ‘The competition provided an opportunity to reward existing recyclers and an incentive to encourage people to start recycling.  We have been delighted with the number of entries received and would like to thank everyone who took part as whether you win or not, the environment is the winner every time!’
