Central Market Roof Refurbishment

09 March 2009

Jersey Property Holdings has signed a contract with a local contractor to refurbish the roof of the Central Market.

Deputy John Le Fondré, the Assistant Minister with special responsibility for Jersey Property Holdings commented today, "Work began in 1990 on preserving the infrastructure of this landmark building; this next phase will continue this preservation work, on what is undoubtedly one of St Helier's landmark buildings. In this difficult economic period, I am especially pleased to announce that Jersey Property Holdings have appointed Colan Construction, a local contractor to undertake this work.

The Market will be open for business as usual throughout the contract period but we would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused to the public".

The contract is for £1.2m which is funded from the States capital programme, supported by rents received from Central Market tenants.

Work on refurbishing the Central Market roof will commence on Monday 9 March 2009 and take up to 54 weeks to complete. The programme will include the re-glazing of the roof lights and dome, the redecoration of the internal structure and the exterior of the dome.

The work will be carried out in three stages starting at the Beresford Street end and scaffolding will be erected in approximately a third of the Market during each stage. In order to minimise disruption to the public the scaffolding work will be completed when the Market is closed but any out of hours working will be finished before 2am.

Normal working will take place Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm and on Saturdays between 8am and 1pm.  On Sundays no work will commence before 9am and will finish before 4pm.
