Chief Minister commemorates Normandy Landings

Jersey’s Chief Minister is travelling to Normandy today (5 June 2009), with Constable Ken Vibert and the Education Minister, Deputy James Reed, to take part in the weekend of events being held there to remember the 65th anniversary of the Normandy landings.

They will be meeting the elected members of the Conseil General de la Manche and will travel with them to Colleville where they will attend the commemoration of the 6 June 2009. This event will be attended by world leaders, including Nicolas Sarkozy and Barack Obama.

They will then travel to Saint-Lo to attend the Concert for Peace at the Notre Dame Church, followed by a ceremony at the Monument Signal in Sainte-Mere-Eglise.

On Sunday 7 June 2009, Senator Le Sueur, Constable Vibert and Deputy Reed will attend a Memorial Mass in the Church Square at Sainte-Mere-Eglise, followed by a special ceremony in La Fiere.

Senator Le Sueur said: “I am looking forward to being part of commemorating this historic event, alongside the hundreds of British veterans whose actions in June 1944 marked a strategic turning point in the war against Germany.”
