Environmental taxes consultation: results published

Almost 200 Islanders have given their views on whether funding for environmental initiatives like recycling and home insulation should continue in Jersey and, if so, how they should be paid for.

Last year the States agreed to spend £2 million in 2009 on environmental schemes. Members agreed to provide funding for 2009 but these initiatives will stop unless they are paid for by environmental taxes.

Responses to whether an environmental tax should be put in place were divided. Some respondents felt a tax should be put in place to allow the environmental initiatives to continue while others were against the idea of further taxes.

Respondents were also divided about whether an environmental tax should take the form of Vehicle Emissions Duty (VED), an increase in fuel duty or a combination of both. They were in favour of a VED that increases in equal or increasing amounts as a vehicle’s CO2 emissions increase.

The results of the consultation are available below. All responses will be considered by the Council of Ministers when deciding how to proceed with this policy.
