Jersey doctors are being advised to test patients with flu-like symptoms for Influenza A (H1N1), commonly known as ‘Swine Flu’ even if they haven’t travelled to an affected area or been in contact with a suspected case.
GP’s were given the latest information today (10 June) after the UK Health Protection Agency updated its recommendations for surveillance and management of patients. It now recommends that anyone aged between 5 and 44 years old with a fever of 38ºC or more and symptoms including a cough, sore throat, headaches or joint pain, should be tested.
The Medical Officer of Health, Dr Rosemary Geller, said: “Although there are no confirmed cases of Swine Flu in Jersey, we are continuing to monitor the changing global situation and erring on the side of caution”.
“The overall advice remains the same, if you have flu-like symptoms you should stay at home and call your GP to prevent spreading the disease. Your GP will then decide whether your symptoms are consistent with flu and if you should be tested.”
The Public Health Department is still asking that children or healthcare workers returning from Mexico or any part of the USA should stay off school or work for 48 hours on their return.
