Jersey Environment Forum appoints four new members

Jersey Environment Forum has just appointed four new members – Adrian Demaid, Professor Emeritus of the Open University, Nick Palmer, environmental campaigner and member of J-CAN (Jersey Climate Action Network) and student representatives Joanna Starkie and Christopher Le Cornu.

The Jersey Environment Forum provides constructive criticism to the Minister for Planning and Environment on specific policy issues, bringing together the areas of interest that each member represents. 

Chairman Nigel Querée said: ‘We’ve recently thanked a group of retiring members: Hugh Forshaw, Graham Le Lay, Bruce Labey , Anna Van Ordt , Craig Leach , Maisie Lemon-Smith ​​and Timothy Nicolle, who between them have given nearly 30 years of voluntary service to the Forum.  We very much look forward to the input of our new members as the coming year will be a busy time for the Forum. We are currently working on input to proposals for environmental taxes and the forthcoming liquid waste strategy.  We have recently commented on the Strategic Plan and are about to release an update on Keeping Jersey Special to assess the delivery of stated aspirations.”

Assistant Minister for the Environment, Deputy Rob Duhamel is delighted to welcome the new members to the Forum ‘I consider the role of the Jersey Environment Forum to be an important element in assisting my Department in the development of policy. Their expertise is extremely useful in informing the debate and providing advice and feedback from a broad spectrum of stakeholders. I am especially grateful to the retiring members for their hard work over the past years and I look forward to working with the new members.’

The Jersey Environment Forum ( JEF ) was established by the Environment and Public Services Committee in June 2003 to bring together the views of all those who have a stake in Jersey ’s environment.  Support for such a forum was confirmed at an open workshop held in December 2002.  The Forum has broad scope and works to produce an independent viewpoint on policies.

JEF comprises 12 members (including the chairman) who are able to represent collectively the broad range of environmental issues that Jersey faces and who are willing to initiate appropriate dialogue to maintain links to the area of expertise they represent.

The expertise covered by the members encompasses the following:-

  • The working landscape and the role of agriculture in shaping the environment.
  • Conservation of the environment at a detailed scale, species and habitats, common and rare.
  • Marine systems
  • Sustainable architecture
  • The “brown” environment, balancing the necessity of infrastructure, industry and trade with the need to conserve habitats, manage waste production and minimise pollution.
  • The environment as a key driver for economic development such as tourism.
  • The quiet enjoyment of the countryside.
  • The place that Jersey has in a global system and the obligations this brings.
  • The need to build awareness of environmental issues, especially in young people
