Joint Director of Civil Aviation confirmed for Channel Islands

27 August 2009

Guernsey’s Director of Civil Aviation, Fergus Woods, has been appointed to act for both Guernsey and Jersey following a successful 6 month trial.

The 2 year appointment means Mr Woods will be the Channel Islands’ independent specialist aviation regulator. His responsibilities include air traffic, meteorological services and safety regulations.

Jersey’s Chief Minister Senator Terry Le Sueur said: "It makes perfect sense for the islands to work together in specialist areas like this. It is not only more cost-effective but from a practical level it’s in both islands’ interests."

"I am delighted that the six month trial has been a success and demonstrates Guernsey’s commitment to working with Jersey on matters of mutual interest," said Carla McNulty Bauer, Guernsey’s Minister for Commerce and Employment. "I am hopeful we can build on this relationship and develop further collaborative initiatives where possible. The agreement demonstrates that with the right political will, co-operation has the potential to create pan-Island benefits and savings."

Mr Woods said: "It’s been fascinating doing the job for both Guernsey and Jersey for the last six months. Each jurisdiction has its own specific projects that demand my attention, but there are so many items of common interest that there are real benefits to be gained from the joint role. I am really pleased to have the opportunity to develop these further over the next two years."

Notes:
  • Fergus Woods is an experienced professional pilot and senior manager who worked for the European Aviation Safety Agency in Cologne before becoming formally established as Guernsey’s Director of Civil Aviation
  • since beginning of March 2009, Guernsey’s Director of Civil Aviation has been acting on behalf of both Guernsey and Jersey (this was on a trial basis that has now been formalised for a 2 year period)
