Statement on the closing of the trial of Dr Moyano

28 January 2009

On the closing of the trial of Dr Moyano, the Minister for Health & Social Services, Senator Jim Perchard, has said:
“We understand what a sad and difficult period this has been for the family and friends of Staff Nurse Liz Rourke and we extend our deepest sympathy to them.

“It has also been a difficult period for our employees, professionally and personally, and we would like to recognise the dedication they have always demonstrated, particularly since the sad events of 2006. Mr Rourke’s resilience and professionalism have been exemplary and our hearts go out to him and his family”.

The Chief Executive for Health and Social Services, Mike Pollard, said:
“We are proud of our hospital and its track record and we regard our standards and professionalism as absolutely crucial. Patient care is always of paramount importance and we are not complacent. If we have the opportunity to learn anything positive and constructive from this trial and its verdict, then we are keen to do so.

“We will recommence our own internal investigation of the incident next week, as this procedure was delayed, quite properly, until after the trial was complete. We plan to make public the key findings and recommendations of this investigation in due course.”
