Event to promote careers in nursing and midwifery

24 September 2009

15 Jersey students will be taking part in a 2 day programme (28 - 29 September) which gives an insight into what it’s like to work as a nurse or a midwife.

It’s the third time the Health department has worked with the Careers Service to develop a programme specifically for 16 to 18 year olds who are interested in becoming nurses or midwives and want more information to decide if it is really the career for them.

‘Insights into nursing and midwifery as a career’ aims to increase the students’ knowledge and understanding of the benefits and rewards (both personally and professionally) of working within health care.  It explores the diverse roles in nursing and midwifery, the career path and the study requirements.

Deputy Anne Pyrke Minister for Health and Social Services, said: "This is the third insights programme run by my department and I’m delighted by how much interest we’ve had from sixth formers in the Island.

"Organised days like these support our strategy to grow our own workforce, on-Island. Nursing and midwifery are particularly rewarding professions and it’s important that we do as much as we can to continue to encourage our young people to consider this as a career."

The students will take part in an interactive programme which encourages them to consider the reality of working as a nurse or midwife while participating in activities, group work and role play.
