Swine flu: continued vigilance needed

The Ministers who are meeting regularly to discuss Jersey’s response to the swine flu pandemic are pleased the containment measures recommended by the Public Health department appear to be working. The last week has seen just 11 new confirmed cases of swine flu in Jersey, which is less than half the number reported last week.

The Chief Minister, Senator Terry Le Sueur, said: “I am pleased that the prolonged containment phase we are promoting here in Jersey seems to be working, and that the number of cases remains modest. The drop in new cases shows Islanders are being responsible and I know our GPs and health staff are working hard to treat the cases which are identified.

"There is no room for complacency though, and we need to continue to be vigilant. We are informed by health professionals that they are still expecting a rise in infection rates when the schools re-open in September.”

At their meeting today, the swine flu co-ordinating group - who meet weekly to discuss the response to the pandemic - agreed they wanted to continue collecting data on confirmed cases. This group consists of the Chief Minister and the Ministers for Health, Education, Social Security and Treasury.​​
