Shipping Registry flies the flag for Merchant Navy Day

02 September 2009

The Red Ensign will be hoisted at Jubilee Wharf on Thursday 3rd September.

Initially the flag will be flown to commemorate Merchant Navy Day, in memory of the 46,000 civilian sailors who lost their lives in the first and second world wars.

It will then be flown daily whenever Jersey ’s Register of British Ships is open for business.

Registrar of Shipping Piers Baker said: ‘The Red Ensign has been flown by ships of the British Merchant Navy, including small pleasure craft, for more than 140 years.

‘Given that all Jersey-registered craft are explicitly entitled to fly the Red Ensign, it seems particularly appropriate to hoist it above Jubilee Wharf for the first time on Merchant Navy Day - the anniversary of the declaration of war by Britain in 1939 - and continue to fly it to reinforce both our gratitude to the British Merchant Fleet and our growing role in the registration of British shipping worldwide.’
