Public invited to discuss registration cards and housing qualifications proposals

03 September 2009

Two drop-in sessions are planned for members of the public to discuss the proposals on housing qualifications and registration cards for all Islanders. The Chair of the Migration Advisory Group, Senator Paul Routier, will be attending.

The lunch time sessions will take place between:

·         1 - 2pm on Friday 4 September at Communicare, St Brelade, and

·         12 - 2pm on Tuesday 8 September at the Town Hall.

“This is a chance for members of the public to ask questions of the Assistant Minister, and a chance for us to listen” said Paul Bradbury , Director, Population Office .

The Population Office has published proposals to give non- Jersey born individuals better opportunities to maintain permanent housing qualifications, and to provide people with registration cards for both Social Security purposes and to gain access to housing and employment.

Mr Bradbury added, "These are important proposals that affect everyone – which is  why we feel members of the public should have the opportunity to question the Assistant Minister “.

Leaflets explaining the proposals in English, Portuguese and Polish are also available at Cyril Le Marquand House, the Social Security Department, the Citizens Advice Bureau, and the Library.

Consultation finishes on the 14 September 2009.

The Migration Policy aims to introduce improved means of regulating and monitoring access to employment and housing. The new Migration law will replace the existing Housing and Regulation of Undertakings laws which currently control access to housing and employment. It is also intended to set up a Names and Address Register of all Island residents. Individuals will be issued with registration cards that will be used to access housing and employment.
