TTS still need your views on reducing car use

12 November 2009

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) is reminding everyone that they now only have less than 3 weeks to make their opinions known on the future of travel and public transport in Jersey. Several hundred people have already completed questionnaires or written in, but the department is keen to hear from more people.

TTS is particularly eager to hear from more people in St Clement, St Helier and St Saviour. So far, responses from these parishes have not been as high as other parishes, in relation to their populations. They are also keen to see more responses from people of retirement age.

In September, TTS produced a consultation document for its Sustainable Transport Policy which outlines its vision and objectives for reducing the amount of car use and invited the public to make their views known by completing a questionnaire or writing into the department.

TTS suggests that reducing traffic levels by at least 15% will be a realistic and significant target to aim for. The impact of a 15% reduction can be clearly seen as this is approximately what traffic levels look like during school holidays.

The call for a reduction in car use is not just happening in Jersey, but is happening across the world. The reasons are mostly the same: reducing congestion and pollution and increasing physical activity to achieve health benefits.

The Sustainable Transport Policy consultation document and accompanying questionnaire is available at the Customer Services Centre in Cyril Le Marquand House and at parish halls, and can be found on the www.gov.je website

The closing date for the consultation is 30 November.

TTS staff will be in town on Saturday 14 November to talk to members of the public about the Sustainable Transport Policy consultation and encourage them to complete a questionnaire and make their opinion count. The Environmental Education Trailer will be in King Street (near Hamons) from 9.30am until 5pm.
