Airport maintenance work

21 April 2010

Essential work to cut grass adjacent to the runway at Jersey Airport will begin this evening (21 April 2010).

The annual process, known as ‘bottoming out’, involves the removal of grass to a different location. Although the grass around the runway is trimmed regularly it must undergo cutting to within 50mm at least once a year to comply with safety and environmental legislation.

The work is due to be carried out tonight and Thursday night (22 April) and may require additional night work next week since the work can only be carried out when the runway is closed. Despite the recent flight disruptions, it wasn't possible to carry out this work during the day as the runway was in use for inter-island flights.

Work is expected to be finished  by 5am each morning, in time for the reopening of the runway and the start of daytime operations. Noise levels and disturbance are expected to be minimal.

If Jersey Airport is required to extend its opening hours to help any backlog of passengers or freight due to the recent air disruption, this essential work will be rescheduled to a later date.
