Health department respond to car accident in St John

23 August 2010

A person was killed and 4 passengers were seriously injured after a car struck a wall at Hautes Croix in St John yesterday afternoon (22 August 2010).

An ambulance was sent to the scene after receiving an emergency call but all available ambulance vehicles were called after an assessment of the situation. A total of 4 ambulances attended the crash scene, along with 2 paramedic cars and a St John Ambulance Brigade vehicle which was at a nearby motorsport event at Sorel.

All 5 casualties were quickly assessed by paramedics who began the difficult task of treatment while the fire service tried to extricate the casualties from the car as quickly and as safely as possible.

Acting Chief Ambulance Officer John Sutherland said “The thoughts of everyone in the Emergency Services are with the families of those involved.

“Serious incidents such as this are challenging when you only have 1 seriously injured casualty. To have 5 in one vehicle presented ambulance service staff with a huge challenge and stretched our resources to the absolute limit.

"All of those involved in this rescue are worthy of the highest praise for the calm and professional way in which they dealt with an incredibly stressful situation, I have nothing but admiration for them all.”

Director of strategy and corporate planning for Health and Social Services, James Le Feuvre, said "I would like to thank all staff for their assistance yesterday. The response was extraordinary. Once the casualties were taken to the hospital’s emergency department by ambulance staff, emergency department staff then worked tirelessly to treat them. Many people were involved and went above and beyond the call of duty, with many staff coming in, even though they were not on call. I would like to thank them all."
