Free bus day

12 April 2010

Passengers will be able to travel by bus, free of charge for 1 day this month.

Transport and Technical Services (TTS) and Connex Transport Jersey Ltd will be running a ‘free bus day’ on Sunday 25 April 2010 to encourage more people to view bus travel as a good alternative to taking the car. The initiative has also been planned to coincide with the Tour de Bretagne cycle race which takes place in Gorey that day.

Free buses to the cycle race area in Gorey are likely to be particularly popular and will enable the public to watch the race without worrying about finding parking. It will also ease traffic congestion if people use the bus rather than driving. However, the entire Island bus network, including the myExplorer services, will be free that day so it won’t just be cycling enthusiasts who will benefit.

“I am pleased that we are able to offer free buses in association with Connex,” said Connétable Mike Jackson, Minister for TTS. “I hope people who haven’t taken a bus for a while will be tempted to use this free service and that it will encourage them to use the bus more often in the future.”

Connex Managing Director Eric Le Roux added "We are very excited about this opportunity. We are aware that there are several events taking place on 25 April – the Tour de Bretagne cycle race at Gorey and the Connex RCIYC Spring Regatta in St Aubin’s Bay – being 2 of them. We are very hopeful that the free bus day will provide extra support to these events and encourage more people to think about their travel arrangements and make the most of all the events."

Route diversions and timetables for Tour de Bretagne will be published in a supplement in the JEP on 21 April and will also be available online.
